Earthing Testing

Grounding systems degrade quietly. Testing measures whether yours still provides the low-resistance path it was designed to — and documents it to standard.

What earthing testing is

Earthing testing measures the electrical resistance of an earthing system, confirming it can discharge fault current and lightning safely into the ground.

An earthing system is not permanent. Soil corrosion, loose connections, moisture changes and ground disturbance all degrade earth pits over time — and none of it is visible from the surface. A system that passed at handover may not pass today.

Testing is the only way to know. It is also what auditors, insurers and ISO certification ask you to produce.

Fall-of-potential method: the earth electrode under test, a potential probe at 62 per cent of the distance, and a current probe at the far end EPC ElectrodePotentialCurrent 62% of DD

Fall-of-potential method — the potential probe sits at 62% of the distance to the current probe.

Methods

What we measure, and how

  • Earth resistance measurement3-pole and 4-pole fall-of-potential method.
  • Soil resistivity testingWenner four-electrode method, for design and remediation.
  • Earth pit analysis and grid continuityIndividual pit condition and bonding across the grid.
  • Clamp-on stakeless testingMeasured without disconnecting the earth pit or interrupting supply.
  • Chemical earthing pit assessmentCondition of the backfill compound and electrode.
  • Reference against standardsResults reported against applicable IEEE and IEC limits.

Why it matters

What earthing protects

  • PeopleA low-resistance path lets protective devices trip instantly during a fault, which is what prevents electrocution.
  • EquipmentSensitive electronics, machinery and IT infrastructure are shielded from surges and voltage spikes.
  • The buildingStray current and ungrounded faults are a recognised cause of electrical fire.
  • Lightning protectionArrester systems can only dissipate a strike if the earthing beneath them is sound.
  • ComplianceLocal safety regulation, IEEE and IEC standards, and ISO certification all require evidence.
  • Your insurance positionDated test records demonstrate the system was verified, not assumed.
